RIP Robin Williams

I wanted to wait until all the facts were released and the social media buzz died down to offer condolences for one of America’s greats, Robin Williams.

The news of his passing hit me pretty hard for three reasons:

I’ve been a huge Robin Williams fan since Mork and Mindy. Happy Days was my favorite show growing up as a kid and he blew me away with his appearance/debut. If you watched that episode, you just knew he was going to be something special.

I briefly encountered him in passing during my Universal stint and told him I was a huge fan and that he was great in What Dreams May Come. He immediately acknowledged me, smiled and said that I made his day. Little moments like that really stick out to me for some reason...

The fact that suicide was involved was painful because it's always the people you least suspect. I'm sad that it had to be him because he brought so much joy to the world with his comedy and presence. It is my hope that he is in a much better place than when he left the world.

One of the best Robin Williams quotes that I'll treasure dearly is from the film, "Jack," when he's giving his valedictorian speech:

"Please, don't worry so much. Because in the end, none of us have very long on this Earth. Life is fleeting. And if you're ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer skies, when the stars are strung across the velvety night, and a shooting star streaks through the blackness turning night into day. Make a wish. Think of me. Make your life spectacular. I know I did."

Vietnam is over. Class is dismissed. The hospital is closing. Genie, you're free. Nanu-nanu. Will Hunting is all better. We will miss you Mr. Williams.
